WASHINGTON – On behalf of the Ward One Democrats, its executive committee issued the following statement after reports that federal immigration agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, an American ICU nurse who has cared for our nation’s veterans, in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 24, 2026:
“We are heartbroken and outraged that yet another American has been brutally killed by armed and masked federal agents terrorizing our communities. Alex Pretti, an American ICU nurse who cared for our nation’s veterans, should be alive today. He deserves justice, along with his family and the American people.
“This tragedy sits squarely at Congress’s feet. For years, Congress has funded ICE with no meaningful restrictions and no real, enforceable oversight. Last year alone, President Trump and his MAGA allies flooded ICE with more than $75 billion - tripling ICE’s budget and making it larger than the annual budget of all other federal law enforcement agencies combined. And just this last week, the House voted to funnel another $10 billion with near-zero accountability to this lawless agency. This is a stunning abdication of congressional oversight, a reckless abandonment of checks and balances, and a shocking betrayal of life, liberty, and justice for all.
“We urge every Democrat in Ward 1 and across this city and nation - especially those with voting representation in the Senate – to contact the U.S. Senate to express their outrage and to demand a ‘no’ vote on the upcoming government funding bill to fund ICE.
“Here at home, the Ward One Democrats continue to call on the District, including MPD, to end any unlawful cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and for the DC Council to exercise its oversight responsibility to ensure compliance. We continue to call on the Council to pass the ‘Safe Community Places and Policing Amendment Act of 2025,’ which prohibits MPD from providing transportation to, or jointly patrolling with, federal immigration enforcement absent a judicial warrant or court order, and designates ‘safe community places’ where MPD does not engage in joint action absent the same.”
