RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE SAFE COMMUNITY PLACES AND POLICING AMENDMENT ACT OF 2025
Adopted Dec. 18, 2025

WHEREAS, the Safe Community Places and Policing Amendment Act of 2025 (B26-0549, hereinafter “the Act”) was introduced by Councilmember Lewis George and co-introduced by Councilmembers Nadeau, R. White, Allen, and Parker on December 15, 2025;

WHEREAS, the Act would prohibit MPD from providing transportation to or patrolling jointly with federal immigration enforcement officers absent a judicial warrant or court order, and furthermore would designate a number of “safe community places” where MPD will not engage in joint action with federal immigration enforcement officers absent a judicial warrant or court order;

WHEREAS, the Ward One Democrats have previously called for an end to MPD cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, in our Resolution Reaffirming the District of Columbia’s Sanctuary City Status, adopted October 16, 2025;

WHEREAS, residents of Ward One, particularly Black and Brown residents, are continuing to experience harm from the cooperation between MPD and federal immigration enforcement; and

WHEREAS, the Act would prevent future harm to Ward One residents and strengthen the status of the District of Columbia as a sanctuary city;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Ward One Democrats support swift passage of this important legislation;

RESOLVED, That the Ward One Democrats urge the DC Council Judiciary and Public Safety Committee to schedule a hearing and markup for the Act without delay;

RESOLVED, That the Ward One Democrats invite residents of Ward One who have witnessed or suffered harm from MPD collaboration with federal immigration enforcement to testify in support of the Act; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chair of the Ward One Democrats or the Chair’s designee be authorized to transmit, testify to, publicize, and otherwise carry out this resolution.
