Our Story

  • Ward One Democrats is the official Democratic Party organization for Ward One in Washington, D.C., a dynamic and diverse community in the heart of our nation’s capital. We are committed to building a Democratic Party that is rooted in equity, leadership, civic participation, and community-based organizing.

  • We are an urban people, united by our commitment to inclusion, democracy, and effective governance. Our work reflects the vibrant diversity of Ward One, where our membership includes residents from every precinct and every walk of life. As a chartered Democratic organization, we operate independently but in close alignment with the goals of the Democratic Party at the city and national levels.

  • The Ward One Democrats exist to:

    • Grow and strengthen the Democratic Party at every level

    • Support Democratic nominees for public office

    • Develop new leaders and increase political participation in our Ward

    • Promote transparency, accountability, and civic education

    • Build bridges between precincts, communities, and other Democratic organizations throughout the District

    We are not bound by the status quo, especially when it reflects unresponsiveness, inefficiency, or injustice. Instead, we strive to be a vehicle for the public will and a voice for the people.

  • Membership in Ward One Democrats is open to any registered Democrat residing in Ward One, D.C. We actively recruit from all precincts and seek to ensure that our leadership reflects the full diversity of our Ward. We do not distribute our membership list to candidates, campaigns, or external organizations.Item description

  • Ward One Democrats is governed by a Democratic Committee, made up of:

    • Elected officers

    • Precinct representatives

    • Democratic elected officials from Ward One (serving ex officio)

    • Members of the D.C. Democratic State Committee who reside in Ward One

    An Executive Committee, composed of officers and selected precinct representatives, oversees day-to-day operations.

    Precinct representatives play a key organizing role and are elected every odd-numbered year through open caucuses held in each Ward One precinct.

    • Host the annual Ward One Democratic Convention

    • Organize regular ward-wide meetings

    • Endorse candidates and ballot measures (by a two-thirds vote of members in good standing)

    • Maintain standing committees on Issues, Finance, and Bylaws, as well as special committees for Elections and other needs

    • Support Democratic values and legislation at the local and national level

  • We are governed by our bylaws and follow Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised as our parliamentary authority. Our organizational processes ensure fairness, transparency, and the meaningful involvement of every member.
