What is the Ward One Democrats?
The Ward One Democrats is the official Democratic Party organization for Ward 1 of Washington, D.C. We work to strengthen the Democratic Party, support Democratic nominees, develop leadership, and increase civic engagement across our diverse neighborhoods.

Who can join?
Membership is open to any registered Democrat who lives in Ward 1. There are no dues, and we actively recruit members from every precinct.

Who runs the organization?
The Ward 1 Democratic Committee is our governing body. It includes elected officers, precinct representatives, and ex officio members such as our Ward 1 Councilmember and members of the D.C. Democratic State Committee. The Executive Committee handles day-to-day business between meetings.

What’s the difference between Ward One Democrats, Ward 1 Democrats, and the Ward 1 Democratic Committee?
Ward One Democrats (proper noun; singular) is the official name of the organization as established in our bylaws.
Ward 1 Democrats (common noun; plural) is a general term for Democrats who reside in Ward 1.
Ward 1 Democratic Committee is the governing body established in our bylaws to conduct the organization’s official business. The bylaws use “Ward 1” in the Committee’s name to reflect its ward-level jurisdiction.

How do I become a member?
Just attend a meeting and confirm that you’re a registered Democrat in Ward 1. Anyone who’s attended at least one meeting since the previous convention is considered a member in good standing.

Can anyone attend a meeting?
In order to participate in the business of the Ward One Democrats you must:
1. Be a Registered DC voter.
2. Be a Registered Democrat
3. Reside in Ward 1
Guests may observe and only at the discretion of the Chair, though only members in good standing may vote.

How are our meetings run?
Our meetings are organized but welcoming. We use basic parliamentary rules to make sure everyone gets a fair chance to speak, and that decisions are made clearly and respectfully.

Do you offer virtual or hybrid meeting options?
Not usually. We value in-person connection and community for our ward wide meetings. Committees may and often do meet virtually, and we may hold online meetings in special cases or public emergencies. If you have accessibility needs, please contact us so we can help you participate.

What are precinct representatives?
Precinct representatives are elected Democrats from each Ward 1 precinct who help organize their local areas and serve on the Ward 1 Democratic Committee.

How are officers and representatives elected?
Officers are elected every even-numbered year at the Ward One Democrats Convention held annually in May. Precinct representatives are elected every odd-numbered year in neighborhood caucuses. All voting is by secret ballot.

How do I share an idea or suggestion?
You can bring up ideas or proposals at any meeting. If it’s something big or detailed, it helps to share it with the officers or a committee in advance so it can get the attention it deserves.

Do you have committees I could join?
Yes. We have standing committees (ongoing) and special committees (temporary, task-based). To join, submit our volunteer form.

Attend a meeting, volunteer for an event, or join one of our standing committees. It’s the best way to connect with neighbors and make a difference in our community.

Are meetings accessible for people with disabilities?
Yes. We choose meeting locations that are wheelchair accessible and near public transportation. If you need a specific accommodation—like ASL interpretation or seating assistance—let us know ahead of time and we’ll make every effort to provide it.
