WASHINGTON – On behalf of the Ward One Democrats, its executive committee issued the following statement after reports that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a legal observer, in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 7, 2026:
“We are heartbroken, outraged, and angry about the killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Renee was a legal observer protecting her neighbors, and she should still be alive today. Instead, an ICE agent shot and killed her in her vehicle, robbing her three children of their mother.
“Reckless ICE operations that send federal agents under-trained in restraint and over-armed with weapons into neighborhoods only escalate fear, fracture trust, and put lives at risk. When federal officers operate without meaningful local accountability, people die.
“Here in the nation’s capital, we know this pain because our residents can be overruled and our local choices can be sidelined by federal power. In October 2025, DC driver Phillip Brown was shot and nearly killed by a federal agent under similar circumstances to the Minneapolis tragedy.
“We stand with Renee Good’s family and with the people of Minneapolis in demanding answers, accountability, and an end to ICE actions that incite fear and intimidation, violate civil rights, and evade transparency.”
In October 20205, Ward One Democrats adopted a resolution reaffirming the District of Columbia’s Sanctuary City status and condemning “the actions of ICE in the District and in Ward 1 as directed by the Trump administration and enabled by Congressional Republicans,” which were designed to “incite fear and intimidation.” The group also called on City officials to end “any continued unlawful cooperation of MPD with ICE and other federal immigration enforcement agents,” warning of “the erosion of community trust in local law enforcement due to any association with ICE.”
