Statement: Ward 1 Democrats Condemn Trump’s Seizure of Local Control
WASHINGTON — The executive committee of the Ward 1 Democrats - the official Democratic organization representing Ward 1 Democrats in the nations capital - this week strongly condemned President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and federal agencies across the District of Columbia and vowed to fight his flagrant violation of residents’ local autonomy.
STATEMENT BY WARD 1 DEMOCRATS:
“The Ward 1 Democrats condemn President Trump’s haplessly despotic actions, including the deployment of the National Guard and federal agencies throughout the District of Columbia and the attempt to seize federal control of our local law enforcement.
“This is a direct attack on the over 700,000 people who call Washington, D.C., home, including the nearly 40,000 registered Democrats in Ward 1.
“There is no public-safety crisis in the District. Trump has fabricated an “emergency” at a time when crime here is at a 30-year low. This is an obvious attempt to take control of our city away from the leaders we’ve chosen to represent us. He is targeting our immigrant communities, our unhoused neighbors, and our youth, though all of us who contribute to the vibrant fabric of the District are in his crosshairs for no reason other than he wants us to be.
“We—teachers, healthcare workers, journalists, public servants, faith communities, and working-class and white-collar workers alike—make D.C. a safe, joyful, prosperous, and racially and economically diverse city. Ward 1 is the city’s densest, most diverse, most progressive, and most urban ward—and it’s the epitome of what scares Trump and his lackeys the most. We are so proud of where we live, and will fight to protect our neighbors and preserve the tolerant, inclusive values that make Ward 1 strong.
“Our Democratic allies across the country and in Congress must stand with us to demand an end to the federal occupation here, and to advance D.C. statehood, the only permanent solution to prevent future attacks on our autonomy.”
