Commissioner Brad Howard serves as Corresponding Secretary of the Ward One Democrats. He came to D.C. in 2007 for an internship with the Human Rights Campaign and for graduate school at American University, beginning nearly two decades of work in Democratic politics and public service.
Brad has served in the Obama Administration, worked as spokesperson for New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, and managed a half dozen campaigns at every level. In 2016, Brad led Rep. Stephanie Murphy’s history-making upset in Florida, ousting a 24-year entrenched Republican in the wake of the Pulse massacre — a race the Washington Post recognized as one of the ten best campaigns in the nation that year.
A former small business owner here in D.C., Brad was a Democratic surrogate on national TV networks like Fox News and NewsNation and at both the DNC and RNC during the 2024 cycle. Today, he’s back on Capitol Hill as chief of staff to a Democratic Member of Congress. In November 2024, he was elected to represent Park View on DC Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1E, where he serves as its engagement secretary. He is a member of Foundry United Methodist Church, and he is a strong supporter of D.C. statehood.
Outside politics, Brad is an uncle to three and cat dad to tuxedo brothers Ousier and Owen — named after his favorite movie, Steel Magnolias.
